With this book, Kimelman completes the trilogy that started with Improve Your Bidding Judgment. He explores the delicate process of making the right decisions in the auction, especially in competitive situations. All the examples are taken from high-level bridge events. As before, the book is presented in quiz format, so the reader can make his own call before the options are discussed and the author’s recommendation presented.
Neil Kimelman (Winnipeg) is a Canadian expert who plans to play much more top-level bridge after his forthcoming retirement.
Readers will benefit from working through over 0 challenging problems, then considering the subsequent discussion. Topics are nicely arranged, and cover many situations, both constructive and competitive, in which a player must choose amongst several calls, none obvious or ideal. Refinements include identifying all available inferences and designing methods for both effectiveness and simplicity. Ensuring that partner will understand one’s call receives due attention.

Imagine sitting down after your regular club game and having an expert spend 10-15 minutes discussing with you each deal that you have just played. What a learning opportunity this presents! This would be the perfect gift for that player who is hoping to move to the next level and start challenging the top players in her club. Or it would be an excellent book for someone who just likes to sit and discuss bridge over a cup of coffee or a cup of tea or some drink even a little stronger.
