A unique way to study defense
In their previous book together, On the Other Hand, David Bird and Larry Cohen presented cardplay instruction in a novel way. 100 pairs of deals were shown - one described by David and the other by Larry. The deals looked similar (in some cases very similar) but an entirely different line of play was necessary to make each of the contracts. The book was well received and won the American Bridge Teachers' Association 'Book of the Year' award.
This follow-up volume uses exactly the same approach, but addresses defense rather than declarer play. Only by clearly understanding the defensive techniques involved will you be able to defeat such contracts when you encounter them at the table.
Reviews
A solid follow-up to 'On the Other Hand'. As usual with these veteran writers, the material and presentation are top-notch. - The Bridge World
David Bird (Southampton, UK) is the world's most prolific bridge writer, with 150 bridge books to his name. Known for the clarity of his writing and explanations, he has won the American Bridge Teachers' Association Book of the Year Award a record nine times. His celebrated humorous fiction series, featuring the cantankerous Abbot, has run for over 45 years.
A former computer programmer and options trader, Larry Cohen was for many years a full-time bridge professional and part-time golfer. Now retired from serious competition, he travels from his home base in Boca Raton, Florida, to fulfill his numerous lecturing engagements, and he writes regularly for several magazines. He has twenty national championships to his name, as well as two world championship medals. He is perhaps best-known for his classic book, To Bid or not to Bid, which at the time was the best-selling book on the game since Charles Goren's heyday (it has since been surpassed by 25 Bridge Conventions You should Know).
Two of our favourite authors -- deservedly won the ABTA Book of the Year award.

Readability is an important factor for effective instruction. Bird has written over 130 bridge books as well as thousands of articles. Cohen teaches thousands of bridge players on land, on sea and online. So it comes as no surprise that they both write simple prose and deliver clear explanations of the what, why, how and when for each of the hands. Nor that they add a pleasant human touch in the interactions between the two of them which serves to enhance the readability.
