About the Book

Planning the Play of a Bridge Hand, by the same author team, was named the 2010 Book of the Year by the American Bridge Teachers’ Association. Building on the success of that title, this book gives the near-beginner a chance to practice the principles on which sound defensive play is based, from the opening lead on. This is not just a series of problem hands, however. Each section contains a brief introduction of its topic, and the ideas are reinforced with carefully explained solutions and helpful tips throughout. Bridge teachers and students will find this book invaluable. CD-Rom now available.

Barbara Seagram (Toronto, Canada) ran one of the largest and most successful bridge clubs and bridge schools in N. America. After selling the club in 2007, she now concentrates solely on teaching and organizing her popular bridge cruises. An ABTA Master Teacher, Barbara has been involved in many of MPP's most successful titles, most notably 25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know. With more than 200,000 copies in print in English alone, this book is the bestselling bridge title since Charles Goren was writing in the 1950s. It has been translated into Japanese, French, Danish and German.

The problems are skilfully structured, with repetitions of vital points, and the book is rounded off with a useful list and explanation of bridge terms.

Hello, Steve…and Carole!! On this first day after Christmas I wanted to share something with you that perhaps you can share with your new 0-20 classes…from someone who a short time ago was in that class, too… I have read over 30 bridge books the past two years…but the three most significant for me as to my improvement and trying to grasp the fundamentals of this great game which has also led me to rereading these three books to see and appreciate how much I have learned and still have to learn are the three books by Barbara Seagram and David Bird Declarer Play at Bridge - A Quizbook; Bidding at Bridge - A Quizbook; Defensive Play at Bridge - A Quizbook. If young bridge players only bought and read these three books and then reread them during their first year of learning at the table they would see significant improvement. Jerry
