About the Book

Seagram and Bird’s Planning the Play of a Bridge Hand was named Book of the Year in 2010 by the American Bridge Teachers’ Association. It introduced the basic concepts of how to go about making a plan as declarer for beginning and improving players, and is a popular text for bridge teachers. This sequel extends the plan to more complex situations, and covers ideas such as safety plays, avoidance play, trump control, dummy reversal, and endplays. It will appeal to players who have a good grasp of the basics of declarer play, and are looking to improve from there.

With more than 200,000 copies in print in English alone, this book is the bestselling bridge title since Charles Goren was writing in the 1950s. It has been translated into Japanese, French, Danish and German.

The Belleville Intelligencer
How many books have Barbara Seagram and David Bird co-authored? I'm sorry, I don't know the answer (or didn't bother to look it up!), but this will likely rank as one of the best. Their book "Planning the Play of a Bridge Hand" was named Book of the Year in 2010 by the American Bridge Teachers' Association. This sequel extends to more complex situations and covers safety plays, avoidance plays, dummy reversals, and endplays. Many practice deals and lots of strong, clear advice make this another winning contribution to bridge literature from this prolific pair.

A truly comprehensive and accessible book... for players a step or two beyond the beginner level.

The hands are good and get across the points that the authors are trying to convey, and the style of analysis is the same as that which was established in the original. It wouldn't feel amiss on anyone's bookshelf.

'Planning the Play' is one of the most highly recommended books for newcomers to the game. 'The Next Level' takes the avid learner beyond the basics, in the same manner as the first volume.  If your goal is to improve your cardplay, work through this book from start to finish. You'll be confidently claiming in no time!
